It's another year. And with another year, comes another season of golf.
Another year of the same old questions: Will Tiger dominate? Will Phil be the perennial bridesmaid? Will Vijay or Ernie manage to break and out and win viewers' hearts (as well as some trophies)? Will a newcomer wow us like Tiger did so many years ago? Like Duval did? Like Jack and Arnie did, back in the day?
Here's to hoping.
Because that's what makes the sport of golf so interesting. The fact that any player's luck can turn on a dime. On any Thursday, it's a new slate. A new chance for a surge. A new beginning, so to speak.
It could be a nobody from Hoboken or the tournament favorite - and that's just it. There's as much of a chance of Phil taking it home as there is Tiger, really, when it comes down to it. It's all up to the guy with the club in his hand. It has nothing to do with a team or a coach or standings. None of that matters.
Golf, at its core, is a one-man show. And a week's slump can easily be followed by a week's triumph. It's a lot like like life that way, and that's just how we like it.
So, here's hoping, 2008. Here's hoping.
